Gaia in Mythology: The Great Mother
Gaia, being one of the first gods to emerge from Chaos — the great void before the creation — was in Greek mythology. She was the Earth herself, and she gave birth to Uranus (the sky), Pontus (the sea), and the mountains. With Uranus, she gave birth to the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecatoncheires, each of them personifying forces of the elements and cycles of creation.
Gaia’s mythology is nurturing as well as fierce. While she is a mother who brings life, she also becomes tyrannical if her children are tyrannized.
