Gratitude often finds expression in statements that usually carry an external object or condition as a hidden agenda of veiling and limiting the actual nature of bliss like “I’m grateful for…” —be it for our health, family, a roof over our heads, our job, pets, partners, or even the vastness of nature and the universe. Though there is nothing wrong with counting our blessings for being mindful and aware of what we “have” and the value these things carry; when it comes to expanding this awareness to a more broader perspective, or while going through difficult times that really challenge our perception of gratitude, it is delicately crucial to check our definition of this concept, and leave the definition and object of gratitude behind (actually, just like with other emotions.)

Therefore, trying to define, compress and objectify gratitude in this way inadvertently imposes limitations from time to time. It can keep feeding separation consciousness both with creating comparison of what we or others have or do not have and focusing on the object of gratitude rather than the pure sensation of it, even if this is totaly unintended. For instance, when we express gratitude for having family, friends or a lover beside us, it may unintentionally suggest that those without their loved ones are missing out on something…
